Presentation Length
Oral presentations - As you begin to prepare your oral presentation please note there is a strict eight (8) minute limit for presentation followed by a four minute question and answer session. (If you were asked to combine 2 abstracts, the total time allowed is 10 minutes. The moderators will have explicit instructions to cut off speakers after eight minutes to protect time for questions and answers. So please plan the length of your presentation accordingly.
Tips and Tricks Presentations - Presentation length is a total of 4 minutes.
Video Presentations - Presentation length is15 minutes, 10 minutes for the video presentation and 5 minutes for questions and answers from the audience.
Slide Preparation
- All slide presentations MUST be created with PowerPoint for PC. No Mac based presentations may be used.
- Personal laptops are not permitted as the set-up time takes away from presentation time.
- Slides will be loaded onto a central computer via the Speaker Ready Room on site at the annual meeting. All presentations that are uploaded on site must be loaded on to the central server at least four (4) hours before your presentation time. If you wish to upload your slides in advance of the meeting additional instructions will be available on the AUGS Web site in July.
- Slides must be simple enough to comprehend at a glance.
- Titles are recommended as a means of orienting the audience.
- One idea per slide is the most effective form of presentation.
- It is often desirable to use your last slide for a list of your conclusions.
- Slides that have white letters on a black, dark blue or dark purple background are the easiest to read.
- Block letters with bold typefaces are preferable.
- Keep in mind that some attendees will be seated very far away from the screen. The clearer your slides, the more readable they will be from the back of the room. Fonts less than 24 point size are difficult to read from a distance.
Slide Content
Please do not spend valuable time thanking the Program Committee, Moderators, or Board of Directors; use this time for your actual presentation. The following slide order is recommended for your AUGS oral presentation:
Slide 1: Title and author
Slide 2: Funding source and disclosures
Body of Presentation Address the following:
- Why was the project undertaken?
- What was done?
- What was learned?
- What does it mean?
- Conclusions
Presentation Skill Tips
You should prepare your presentation well in advance of the meeting. Practice your presentation so that you may speak from memory and notes rather than just reading your paper aloud. As you practice, check to be sure that your presentation does not exceed your time limit. Your time is limited; therefore, you should plan your presentation carefully and coordinate each step of your lecture with your slides. Time limitations for each presentation will be enforced by the moderators of each session.
Presenting without the need to read or refer to note cards will allow you optimal eye contact with the audience. Arrive at the session early and acquaint yourself with the location of the equipment you will be using.
