NIDDK New Research Directions for Urinary Incontinence Symposium
Wednesday, January 7, 2009 - Friday, January 9, 2009
Bethesda, MD

This international forum has been developed to exchange current information, as well as contemplate and develop new concepts and directions for future research and treatment of adult urinary incontinence in both men and women.  A very active poster session is planned which welcomes concepts in basic science, translational science and clinical research.

Investigators who attend the NIDDK New Research Directions for Urinary Incontinence Symposium are encouraged to submit abstracts of their research activities. Submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges. The accepted abstracts will be presented at poster sessions on Wednesday and Thursday, January 7 & 8. The judges will also select the top abstracts, which will be presented as 5-minute podium presentations on Friday, January 9. The presenters of the top abstracts will receive travel awards to supplement their attendance at the Symposium. Please note: The deadline for submission of abstracts is December 1, 2008.

Avoidance and Management of Mesh Complications in SUI and Pelvic Floor Repair Surgery
Wednesday, January 21, 2009; 5:00 pm – 7:30 pm ET

Faculty: Vince Lucente, MD (Course Director), Mickey Karram, MD; Doug Hale, MD; Heather Van Raalte, MD

In recent years the treatment options for these conditions have grown to include the use of mesh.  With this increased use of synthetic mesh for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence and pelvic floor repair surgery, there is an increased need for education to avoid potential mesh complications, as well as handling of mesh related complications.  Topics presented will include patient selection, surgeon technique, anatomic review of tissue planes and tissue preparation.  In the event erosion or exposure of mesh should occur the faculty will discuss techniques for managing these complications.

Surgical Tutorial on da Vinci® Anterior Pelvic Exenteration

The University of Pennsylvania Health System and Intuitive Surgical, Inc

The anterior pelvic exenteration will include a radical hysterectomy, bilateral para-aortic lymphadenectomy, bilateral pelvic lymphadenectomy and a radical cystectomy. Drs. Randall and Eun will elaborate on strategies for surgically managing this type of complex gynecologic surgical case while leveraging the potential advantages offered by the da Vinci® Surgical System.
