April 10, 2023 03:30 PM

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the AUGS Board, I would like to officially introduce our Interim CEO, Stacey Barnes, as well as provide additional information on our staff leadership transition plan.

The Board unanimously approved Stacey’s appointment as interim CEO, and we are thrilled that she has agreed to serve in this role. Over the past two years, the Board has worked closely with Stacey as she led us through a review of AUGS products and services, guided our discussions around Board composition, and facilitated our most recent strategic planning process. Stacey has extensive experience in working with non-profit organizations and brings a fresh new perspective to the Society. We have complete confidence in her ability to step into this position, and we have worked hard to ensure a seamless transition for our members, volunteers, and partners.

Stacey will serve in a 12-month Interim CEO position, ending March 31, 2024. During this time, the Board will work to identify a permanent CEO for the organization. Please read on below to learn more about Stacey and her background. As always, I would invite you to send any questions or comments to me or to the Board of Directors using the email address: .

Catherine Bradley, MD

AUGS President

Meet Stacey Barnes, AUGS Interim CEO

Stacey joined the AUGS team in March 2021 as Senior Director for Operations and Programs. She worked closely with Michelle Zinnert and the AUGS Board on several initiatives, including:

  • Leading the Board through the development of our current strategic plan;
  • Overseeing the AUGS Foundation including launch of the research career mentoring program and State of the Science Conference; and
  • Supporting the Scientific Committee in the development of the soon to be published AUGS Research Agenda.

While she served AUGS for the past two years as a Senior Director, she has worked with AUGS in the past. Some of you may remember her as Stacey Schmidt when she first joined the AUGS team in 2008 as a SmithBucklin team member. During that time, Stacey was heavily involved in PFD Week planning, abstract management, the Foundation, and the launch of AUGS patient education initiatives. You may also remember her work as part of the consulting team who helped AUGS evaluate its relationship with, and eventually transition away from, SmithBucklin in late 2014.

Stacey has always had great respect for the Society and its leadership and is inspired by the AUGS mission. She was thrilled when the opportunity presented itself to rejoin the AUGS team in 2021 and looks forward to her new leadership position, maintaining the incredibly talented AUGS staff, and supporting the Board and Society through this transition period.

Career Highlights:

  • Stacey has spent most of her professional career working with non-profits, beginning in 2005 when she joined Association Headquarters, a management company in Mount Laurel, NJ. It was here that she found her passion for supporting non-profits in the achievement of their mission. While at Association Headquarters she served as New Business Development Coordinator before being promoted to Assistant Executive Director for the Attention Deficit Disorder Association (ADDA) and the American Association of Heart Failure Nurses (AAHFN).
  • In 2008, Stacey relocated to Washington, DC, where she was first introduced to AUGS at SmithBucklin as Operations Manager. While with SmithBucklin, Stacey was promoted to Senior Manager, Operations and Education for the National Association Medical Staff Services (NAMSS) as well as Executive Director for the Society for Clinical and Translational Science (SCTS).
  • In 2014, Stacey and her family relocated to Richmond, Virginia where she joined Association Options, a consulting firm specializing in governance training, executive recruitment and placement, management company search and selection, and strategic planning. As Vice President of Executive Recruitment and Senior Director of Governance and Operations, Stacey had the opportunity to work with over 70 state and national non-profit organizations representing a wide variety of professional and trade interests. Her diverse experience has provided the AUGS Board with new perspectives on governance and leadership development, as well as product review and evaluation.

On a personal note, Stacey enjoys spending her free time with her husband, Matt, and daughters Addison (11 going on 15) and Charley (soon to be 9). Neither daughter shares their mom’s passion for lacrosse, however, both girls have found a love for horses.
